So i know im touting cringe, word sandwich, armchair psychology here in a situation i know nothing about, buti don't think the story about Mika's friend is *truly* about Independent women, but rather that's just the vehicle that girl picked. I think that poor girl views her previous sweet/passive personality as the reason she was taken advantage of, and has adopted this new less pleasant attitude in self-defense, and conflates this demand for security-via-superiority, the former of which was taken away from her, as being synonymous with independence, even though they're two different concepts like Mika said. Also sometimes the abused will subconsciously take on some qualities of their abusers in an attempt at internal validation, or she saw his "strength" that allowed him to control her, and wants to be "strong" too, therefore safe.
